Bacardi Family Limited Profile
The history of Bacardi Family Limited dates back to 1862 in Santiago de Cuba, when Don Facundo Bacardi started his rum refinery there. Prior to the establishment of the facility, Don Facundo was already experimenting with spirits and his efforts soon paid off when he became the first person who produced clean, white rum. With this knowledge, he started a commercial endeavor. The success of the family-owned enterprise soon ushered the Bacardi Family into the social circles of Cuba and later on secured a spot in the country’s history, where members of the distinguished clan played prominent roles during the country’s significant events. After the Cuban Revolution, the Bacardi Family had a falling out with Cuban leader Fidel Castro, and the company had to relocate its headquarters to Hamilton, Bermuda From there, it oversaw its operations through its international offices that were created long before the Revolution started. Advances in technology have allowed the Bacardi Family Limited to produce rum and other spirits using renewable energy. The company has invested over $18 million to develop the now patented anaerobic digester. The company’s distilleries and other facilities in Puerto Rico, Scotland, and Italy now use innovative wastewater treatment methods to convert wastewater into biogas, which satisfies a significant portion of these facilities’ energy requirements. In 2007, over 100 countries sold Bacardi rums and spirits, contributing to the $5.5 billion profit mark of the company that year. Despite no existing business ties with Cuba, the Bacardi Family Limited always emphasizes its Cuban roots. The Bacardi Family Limited still continues to give the world its share of world-class spirits and rum. Having acquired prominent companies in the rum and spirits industry, Bacardi has grown to become one of the largest family-owned companies in the world.
