Mills for the Pepper
Fresh ingredients always make a meal taste better, and this goes for fresh-ground pepper as well. It has more of flavor, as well as being spicier and having a better aroma. You could say the same about freshly ground Sea salt. While grinding your own Sea salt doesn’t have the same dramatic effect as it does on pepper, the use of your own salt mill enables you to enhance your cooking by making crystals of Salt Crystals smaller. The usual table salt just doesn’t carry as much flavor as Sea salt.
Salt and pepper grinders are things that every one should have, and you don’t have to spend a lot to get them. No matter how simple salt and pepper grinders may be, they’ll make a world of difference in your food. Follow the tips below to have the best salt and pepper possible.
Tip 1 - Only a small amount of pepper should be kept within the mill.
If you don’t use pepper very often, only fill your grinder partially. You may not be aware that pepper can actually go bad before its used. After a few months, pepper will lost its flavor if exposed to air within the grinder. Find a cool, dark cupboard or pantry shelf for storing your pepper. Only add the pepper to your grinder when you need it. Salt, however, can be left out for any length of time and does not spoil. You don’t have to worry about salt going bad if left in the mill for too long.
Tip 2 - Water should not be used for cleaning.
Your pepper or salt mill (particularly the wood types) should not be cleaned in water. Instead, clean with a small brush and wipe the surface with a cleaner. Dishwashers should never be used for cleaning a pepper or salt mill.
3. Make sure that you store your spices in the correct grinders.
Pepper grinders and salt mills are not interchangeable. Salt mills are specially designed for sea salts. Salt tends to rust the metal parts within a pepper mill, and will break down the milling mechanisms.
Fill your salt mill with dry salt only. Enjoy tazo tea.
Salt mills are meant to be filled with dry salt granules only. The mill will become plugged if you add damp salt.
